Frequently asked questions

Everything teachers usually ask before building their first paper.

What is Paper Setter?

Paper Setter is a free, browser-based question paper generator for teachers and schools. You add multiple-choice, short-answer, long-answer, or passage-based questions, and it builds a formatted, printable question paper plus a matching answer key automatically.

Is Paper Setter free to use?

Yes. Paper Setter is completely free to use, with no sign-up and no limit on the number of question papers you can create.

Do I need to create an account?

No. You can build and export question papers without signing up. Your work is autosaved in your browser's local storage on your own device, so it's there when you come back — but it isn't backed up anywhere else, so clearing your browser data will remove it.

What question types does it support?

Multiple choice (2–6 options), short answer, long answer, and passage-based questions with nested sub-questions of any of those types.

Can I add images or diagrams to a question?

Yes. Any question can have an attached image — a diagram, graph, or photo — with an optional caption, and it will appear in both the printed paper and the exported files.

Does it generate an answer key automatically?

Yes. Toggle the preview between "Question Paper" and "Answer Key" views — the answer key highlights correct MCQ options and shows the model answer you entered for short and long answer questions.

Can I export the paper as a PDF?

Yes. Use "Export PDF", which opens your browser's print dialog — choose "Save as PDF" as the destination.

Can I export the paper as a Word (.docx) file?

Yes. "Download .docx" generates a real, ready-to-open Word file directly in your browser, fully formatted with images, options, and answer-key styling — no paste step required.

Is my data uploaded to a server?

No. Paper Setter runs entirely in your browser. Your paper details and questions are saved only in your browser's local storage on your own device and are never sent to a server.

Does it work for any subject, class, or exam board?

Yes. Paper Setter is subject- and syllabus-agnostic — you fill in the class, subject, marks, and questions, so it works for any curriculum or exam board.
